Abstract

I’ve been working on Servo since 2016 and have accumulated quite a few interesting stories to tell, I’ll be talking about how we use derive and other kinds of procedural macros to avoid repetitive error-prone code and even increase the global safety of the code base.
Servo is the oldest Rust project in existence that isn’t Rust itself, and thus it has many interesting stories to tell. Ever wondered how to implement CSS and HTML engines while keeping one’s peace of mind? How to make your coworkers working with C++ jealous? How to go beyond Sync and end up with interior mutability types on multiple threads at once for great effect? What’s my favourite kind of bread? Oops, sorry wrong topic. In this talk I’ll tell you about a few personal success stories I had with Rust in the making of Servo, and how it made life easier for everyone involved.
